You are interested in handiwork, craft or you just have nothing to do, havent you? You have found the channel you really need. Here you can find lots of crafts, hand made items, and the main thing is that they all made of make-shifts and at the lowest cost!
I wanted to make a simple carving mallet, to be used for controlled chisel action and maybe one day, engraving. This is a simple wood turning project on the lathe.
Usually these are made completely from wood, so they dont harm the chisel handles, but I dont carve that often and chisel handles are easy to make on the lathe anyway.
The metal head allows it to have a nice weight in a small frame. A brass mallet could be made to have the same effect, and also be more gentile on the stuff you hammer on with it.
Alright youve probably seen coloured pencil being turned a milion time on YouTube, but have you ever see it done without dumping epoxy resin on them?

Vous avez sans doute déjà vu 20 fois sur YouTube le tournage de crayons de couleurs, mais avez-vous déjà vu cela fait sans résine epoxy?

This weeks project is something I have been working on for a while, the wood has taken longer than expected to dry out allowing the resin pour. The root was saved last year following the removal of a hedge.
The amount of resin used in the project was approximately 4kg. Although not shown in the video, the root was rough turned then placed in an over for several hours to speed up the drying, even then it still took a further 4 weeks to dry out and reach a state of equilibrium.
The initial rough turn was a little more shaky on the lathe than I would have liked and not something I would recommend doing for any extended period, however it was only a few minutes before it was balanced up enough to turn the speed up a little. Unfortunately the minimum speed on the lathe is only 500rpm, which is a little too fast for out of balance rough turning of things this size.
In this video I turn a piece of green/wet Plum into a naturel edge vessel ,I would normally seal the ends and store a piece like this to dry naturally but thought I would turn this green for a change… I spun the piece as fast as I thought was safe and used a heat gun in an attempt to dry it ,this was a bit of an experiment so Im expecting a bit of movement and some splitting around the pith which in my opinion adds more character to a piece like this but I understand not everyone will like this… I finished it with Danish oil and will eventually apply 4 or 5 coats…
